The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Edo State chapter has blasted Governor Monday Okpebholo for making what it called false claims about the ongoing Benin-Asaba Expressway rehabilitation.

The PDP stated that the governor’s claim of starting the project is a distortion of established public records in a statement released on Saturday by Chris Nehikhare, the party’s caretaker committee’s publicity secretary.

Nehikhare specifically criticized a recent statement made by the chief press secretary of the governor, which attributed the initiative to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

He rejected the attribution, calling it “a purposeful misrepresentation of the facts” and “political propaganda.”

“The expressway project was neither conceived nor initiated by the current administration, rather, it was a product of the strategic vision of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, executed through a public-private partnership arrangement, Nehikhare said.”

He disclosed that Triple A Infrastructure, InfraCorp, and Africa Plus Partners inked a N228 billion concession deal with the Obaseki administration in January 2024 to reconstruct the Benin-Asaba Expressway.

According to Nehikhare, the arrangement complied with all legal approval procedures and regulatory requirements and was a component of the Federal Government’s Highway Development and Management Initiative.

According to him, the project is a progressive infrastructure renewal program designed to boost regional connections and long-term economic growth.

Nehikhare further claimed that the APC-led Federal Government purposefully postponed the project’s implementation for political purposes, namely to align with the run-up to the Edo gubernatorial election in 2024.

The PDP called Governor Okpebholo’s recent site inspection tours “political theater” and claimed that they had no real effect on the project’s financing or delivery.

“The people of Edo State are politically sophisticated and will not be misled by empty publicity stunts or attempts to rewrite history,” Nehikhare stated.

Instead of claiming credit for programs he inherited, he pushed the governor to concentrate on starting unique, people-centered projects that represent his own vision and leadership.

The party also called on Governor Okpebholo to prove his abilities by launching new development initiatives that his administration can legitimately claim.
