A leader of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Edo Osahon, has claimed that PDP leaders tried to use some traditional leaders in the South-West to gain President Bola Tibubu’s support during the legal battle at the Edo State governorship election petition tribunal.

But according to Osahon, the purported strategy didn’t work.

Osahon claims that PDP leaders tried to rally the traditional chiefs to seek an audience with Tinubu in a final attempt to sway the tribunal’s decision. According to him, the PDP intended to bargain for a favorable tribunal decision.

“This desperate bid and surprising turn of events by the PDP and its candidate has ultimately fallen flat, according to our sources,” Osahon said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He added, “What we know is that such a plan cannot work. Nobody can influence the tribunal which is made of erudite jurists. Those hoping to get to our President to help with their case are on a fruitless journey. Mr President has always allowed processes and systems to work.

“It is unheard of that some people would even sit down to think of such an unrealistic strategy.

“Before long, it was learned that there is a new plan again to disrupt the tribunal sitting in Abuja, owing to what is perceived as inability of their witnesses who failed to present proof that they won the election.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, proclaimed Okpebholo of the APC the victor of the Edo gubernatorial election after he received 291,667 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, who received 247,274 votes.

In order to contest the poll’s outcome, PDP and Ighodalo filed appeals with the tribunal after rejecting the results.

On January 17, 2025, the tribunal, presided over by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, began a thorough hearing of the seven petitions contesting the election results that declared Governor Monday Okpebholo the victor.
