JUST IN: Bafarawa speaks about joining SDP

Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, the former governor of Sokoto State, has refuted social media allegations that he has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

A widely shared post that said he had switched to the opposition party sparked the rumors.

Bafarawa, who was governor of Sokoto from 1999 to 2007, had earlier said in January 2025 that he was leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He stated in his letter of resignation that he wanted to concentrate on empowering young people through his Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI).

At a number of public gatherings, he also said unequivocally that he was retired from politics and would no longer run for or occupy any political office.

A close associate of the former governor denied the defection claims, according to the New Telegraph.

He made it clear that Bafarawa is not aware of the allegations and is currently out of the country.
