An inquiry into Duru Damian, who was detained by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for allegedly failing to disclose $49,000 at Lagos Airport, has been launched by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This was said in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday by EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale.

He claimed that during a routine inspection at the AML/CFT Currency Declaration Desk at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, Damian was apprehended by NCS agents.

“Upon his arrest, the suspect, who was scheduled to travel on Emirates Airline to Dubai, claimed he had only 10,000 dollars on him.

“However, when a search was conducted on him, a sum of 49,000 dollars was discovered undeclared, totaling 59,000 dollars,” he said.

As he turned over control to the EFCC, Effiong Harrison, the Area Comptroller in charge of the NCS at the airport, criticized travelers for not adhering to the currency disclosure requirement.

He claims that important airports are continuously raising awareness and making statements about the necessity for travelers to declare their currency or equivalents.

Assistant Commander Ahmed Ghali, the EFCC’s acting zonal director for Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, stated that the agency will uphold the law when he received the suspect.
