On Friday, Tesla, the electric vehicle company founded by U.S. tech billionaire Elon Musk, halted new purchases of its Model S and Model X on its official Chinese website.
Bloomberg reported that customers also can no longer place orders for these two imported models through Tesla’s WeChat mini program.
Until the end of March, the Chinese website featured an “order now” button for both models, but that option was removed as of Friday.
Tesla is currently facing a series of challenges in both its home market and in China.
In China, the American automaker is contending with mounting competition from rapidly expanding local manufacturers like BYD, which continues to see impressive sales figures.
In the previous month, BYD sold 371,419 new energy vehicles, which include plug-in hybrid and battery-powered models.
