Emergency rule: Tinubu releases statement about Akpabio, Abbas

President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its approval of the state of emergency proclamation in Rivers State.

The President specifically praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other key officers and members, for putting the security and welfare of Rivers State’s citizens ahead of political interests and other factors.

Tinubu called the approval a vital move to restore stability following a prolonged political crisis in the state.

The statement comes after the House of Representatives approved the state of emergency in Rivers State despite strong opposition from various stakeholders.

The Senate also ratified the State of Emergency in Rivers State as declared by Tinubu. Additionally, the Senate confirmed the six-month suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his Deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Nevertheless, Tinubu emphasized that the approval highlighted what the country can achieve when leaders are guided by unity of purpose and patriotism.

Part of the statement read: “The President specifically commended the National Assembly’s leadership—Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, other principal officers and members—for prioritising the security and welfare of Rivers State people above partisan interests and other considerations.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured.”
