Senate President Godswill Akpabio has affirmed that the National Assembly will take the lead in resolving the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State.

Akpabio emphasized the legislative arm’s commitment to restoring peace and political balance in the state, stating that steps are already being taken to address the underlying issues and bring all concerned parties to the table for dialogue.

He made these remarks on Thursday during the official launch of the Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State. The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people,” Akpabio said.

The political turbulence in Rivers erupted months ago, resulting in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.

In response to the escalating conflict, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency and placed Fubara on a six-month suspension.

Since then, Fubara has held meetings with the president and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike—his former political ally turned rival—in an effort to seek common ground.

Wike, who has shown willingness to resolve the crisis, recently urged Fubara to engage directly with other key stakeholders in the state as part of the reconciliation process.
