The medical director of Ikorodu General Hospital has been ordered by Mrs. Temitope Oladele, a Lagos State District Coroner, to make public any documents pertaining to the deposit, release, or present condition of the remains of Mr. Pelumi Onifade, a journalist who allegedly passed away while in police custody during the October 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations.

The injunction was issued over the weekend in response to an application made by Monday Arunsi, the attorney for Media Rights Agenda (MRA), who represented the late journalist’s family alongside Ms. Jennifer Wala of the Charles Musa & Co. legal firm.

Citing medical confidentiality, the hospital had previously refused to give the records, Arunsi said the court.

According to a statement provided to reporters, Onifade, a reporter for Gboah TV, was detained by Lagos State Taskforce police officers while reporting the demonstrations and subsequently discovered deceased at the mortuary of Ikorodu General Hospital.

After MRA filed a wrongful death action against the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Government, demanding a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, the Federal High Court in Lagos reportedly ordered the ongoing coroner’s inquest.

Justice Ayokunle Olayinka Faji was shown to have directed the Attorney-General to make sure a coroner’s inquest was held in order to ascertain the cause of death and identify the accountable parties in a July 19, 2024, ruling.

According to the statement, Arunsi informed the court during Friday’s hearings that he and a colleague went to the hospital on July 31, 2025, in accordance with an earlier court order to acquire the documents.

The Medical Director, however, declined, claiming that disclosure could only be forced by a court order.

In addition to granting the application, the Coroner was reported to have mandated that the Medical Director or any other individual responsible for the records furnish the desired data within seven days of the order being issued. The issue was postponed for mention until August 19, 2025.
