Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has urged members of the Joint Tax Board (JTB), the highest coordinating body for tax authorities in Nigeria, to work towards establishing a fair and efficient taxation framework that supports the tax reform agenda introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He made this call during the opening session of the 2025 Joint Tax Board Strategic Retreat, which took place on Friday at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort in Ikogosi-Ekiti.

Governor Oyebanji emphasized that a strong and inclusive tax system plays a critical role in economic development and improving the quality of life for citizens. He praised President Tinubu for initiating comprehensive tax reforms aimed at uplifting the standard of living across the nation.

The Governor highlighted that the proposed tax reforms are designed to broaden the tax net, improve revenue collection, streamline the compliance process, promote accountability and transparency among tax bodies, and integrate digital solutions into tax administration.

According to him, the full rollout of the legislation in 2026 is expected to transform revenue generation and support long-term, inclusive development.

He encouraged the retreat’s participants including Chairpersons of Internal Revenue Services from all 36 states to thoroughly examine the reform’s impact on national growth. He described the reform effort as a crucial move toward building a resilient, self-sustaining economy capable of driving transformational policies.

“With the signing of these Tax Reform Bills by the President, and the planned commencement of implementation starting from January 2026, we have been presented with a historic opportunity to reshape how our country mobilizes revenue, fosters compliance, and delivers sustainable development.

“The courage and vision of Mr President deserve our highest commendation as we align with his determination to reposition Nigeria for greatness. These reforms will shape the trajectory of Nigeria’s economy for years to come.

Speaking at the retreat, the Chairman of the Joint Tax Board, Mr. Zacch Adedeji, praised Governor Oyebanji for fostering an environment where internal revenue systems can flourish. He pointed out that the theme of the retreat, “Re-imagining the Nigeria tax eco-system: harnessing the four tax reform laws as game changers in tax administration”, was carefully chosen to reflect the national commitment to President Tinubu’s tax reforms.

Adedeji, represented by Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, Coordinating Director at the Federal Inland Revenue Service, also lauded Ekiti residents for their willingness to pay taxes. He attributed this voluntary compliance to the Governor’s performance, noting that effective use of public funds for citizens’ welfare had encouraged public trust and increased revenue for the state.

Mr. Olaniran Olatona, Chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, also expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for his unwavering support. He reaffirmed the commitment to utilizing internally generated revenue for the state’s development, which, in turn, has motivated residents to willingly fulfill their tax obligations.
