Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially launched a new state-backed airline named Enugu Air, calling the development a major milestone for the state and a strong example of collaboration between the government and private sector.
The airline’s maiden flight took off on Monday, an event the governor described as a defining moment for the people of Enugu.
During the ceremony, Mbah explained that the launch aligns with his broader agenda to transform Enugu into a top destination for investors, residents, and tourists across Nigeria.
“It is an honour to stand before you today, not only as a governor but as a fellow believer in the power of vision,” he declared.
Although the debut flight came shortly after his administration’s two-year mark, Mbah said the new airline stands as “a fitting gift to Ndi Enugu.”
He emphasized that Enugu Air represents far more than just a new transport service; it marks a strategic push to create better conditions for business and unlock industries previously seen as inaccessible.
“We began this journey with no empty promises. Among the key objectives we outlined upon assuming office was the pledge to make Enugu the premier destination for investments, living, and tourism in Nigeria. Today, we are witnessing a clear pathway to that goal,” the governor said.
According to Mbah, the airline’s launch reflects what can be accomplished when effective public-private partnerships are formed and nurtured.
He added, “With our airline, we are opening doors to a sector that once felt out of reach. Enugu Air has given more wings to our dreams, and today we take that first flight together.”
At the same event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, addressed concerns surrounding the future of the Enugu airport. He clarified that the facility is not being sold off, but rather being concessioned to private entities.
“I have seen some comments saying, ‘No, we are selling Enugu airport out.’ We are concessioning it. The process is supported by Mr. President, by FAAN, by the Ministry of Aviation, and by the National Assembly committees.
“We are just in the process of handing Enugu airport to private investors who will come and make this place open, including the cargo terminal,” he said.

Keyamo also highlighted the economic impact of the planned cargo terminal, noting that it will enhance export activities and generate employment for local residents.
“You can now process exports directly from Enugu here the cargo terminal for the good and employment of Enugu people. I thought it was necessary to mention it here today.”
He commended Governor Mbah for taking initiative and pushing for private sector involvement without waiting for lengthy government procedures.
