Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s manager, has already responded to criticism for benching Kobbie Mainoo.
The management has been fiercely attacked by commentators and Red Devils fans who believe the player should play more regularly.
However, the Portuguese had recently stated that his captain, Bruno Fernandes, would not be withdrawn from the XI to make room for the 20-year-old because they both play the same position.
Erik ten Hag, a 20-year-old academy product, rose through the ranks at Old Trafford during his time there.
Mainoo played 32 games for Manchester United in all competitions during the 2023-24 season.
However, after Amorim’s arrival, the midfielder has lost playing time.
Responding to criticisms from individuals who believe the England international should play more frequently, Amorim said reporters, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
“Kobbie Mainoo needs to fight for his job. I think that is not a bad thing to be on the bench of Man United at 20 years old,” he said.
“I remember Ronaldo was on the bench, sometimes Rooney, Veron… I remember the history of Manchester United and nobody didn’t fall”.
