Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has reportedly identified Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne.
The 21-year-old has been impressive for the Bundesliga side since breaking into the first team as a teenager. Wirtz played a pivotal role in helping Xabi Alonso’s team secure the Bundesliga title in a historic unbeaten campaign last season.
While Wirtz had been linked with a move to Real Madrid, Manchester City now believes he can bring the same dynamism to their midfield as De Bruyne, who is expected to leave the club this summer.
Since the start of last season, Wirtz has contributed to 41 goals in 57 games.
De Bruyne himself had a remarkable breakthrough period in the Bundesliga, leading Wolfsburg to the DFB Pokal and a second-place finish in the league, before making the move to Manchester City. He has since scored 106 goals and provided 174 assists in 413 appearances under Guardiola.
