Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged Arsenal to consider hijacking the Red Devils’ move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Rooney believes that Mateta, who is known for his physicality and goal-scoring ability, could be a valuable addition to Arsenal’s squad under manager Mikel Arteta.
Mateta has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, with the club already initiating talks with the 27-year-old’s representatives.
Since joining Palace from Mainz in 2022, Mateta has netted 34 goals across all competitions over the past two seasons.
“Jean-Philippe Mateta is a big, strong lad who scores a lot of goals,” Rooney told BBC Sport.
“From watching Arsenal over the past few games in the Premier League, they have put a lot of balls into the box without having anyone to get on the end of them.
“I am sure he would help from that point of view.”
Arsenal are looking to strengthen their attack with a top striker in the upcoming summer transfer window, though it remains to be seen whether they will pursue Mateta as an option.
