Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has explained why he decided to substitute Victor Osimhen during Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar.

At the 55-minute mark of the play-off second leg, the Yellow and Reds were trailing 2-0.

Osimhen sparked the comeback by scoring in the 56th minute, and Roland Sallai leveled the score 14 minutes later.

However, Buruk took Osimhen off 10 minutes before the final whistle, with his team still behind on aggregate.

The manager explained that the substitution was made to prevent injury.

“Since our other forward Morata was injured, we took Osimhen off in the last 10 minutes. It wasn’t the night we wanted. We were more hopeful. If we had scored the first goal, we could have gotten into the game even more,” he told the club’s official website.

“We can name a few names in good form in terms of performance, but we were below average in terms of team performance.”
