Former international football player Segun George Hunkarin and his business partner Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for attempting to smuggle a shipment of cocaine into Nigeria via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, said in a statement released on Sunday that Chinedu, a frequent traveler who regularly ships clothing from Turkey to Nigeria and food from Nigeria to Turkey, was initially detained when he arrived at the Lagos airport on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
When his carry-on bag was searched, 37 wraps of cocaine weighing 800 grams were found hidden within.
According to Babafemi, the investigation showed that Chinedu had flown in from Turkey on an Ethiopian Airlines flight after stopping in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to pick up his bags from someone else before continuing on to Nigeria.
Subsequent investigations revealed that his accomplice, Segun Hunkarin, a former professional football player, was waiting to pick up the shipment from the airport parking lot. After years of playing football for Brazilian clubs, Hunkarin was quickly located and taken into custody on the spot.
Hunkarin acknowledged in his testimony that he had twice transported drugs from Brazil to Ethiopia while playing professionally in South America, but he insisted he had never brought any drugs into Nigeria.
