Faction drags Jigawa PDP leadership to court over disputed congresses

A splinter group has taken the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to court in an attempt to reverse the results of recent local government and state congresses, suggesting that the crisis inside the Jigawa State chapter of the party is getting worse.

Operating under the moniker Committee for Ensuring Justice and Privileges and led by Alhaji Abba Anas Adamu, the resentful section has accused the party of conducting the congresses in a way that is against democratic norms and internal laws.

Alhaji Adamu made serious complaints to the way the elections were conducted in a statement to reporters shortly after Tuesday’s sessions before the High Court in Dutse. He claimed that the entire operation was opaque and deviated from constitutional protocols.

Alhaji Adamu alleged that, “The leadership of the party is being controlled by a single individual who denies other members their rights and privileges,” highlighting that the exercise was tainted by anomalies and excluded a large number of devoted members.

He said that some local government congresses were held in private houses rather than authorized locations, and that the state congress was merely a succession of appointments rather than a democratic process.

Citing egregious procedural infractions, the organization has petitioned the court to declare the congress results invalid. A new date of May 28, 2025, has been set for the lawsuit.

Adamu also sent out a warning, stating that if the claimed injustices are not corrected, tensions inside the party could rise and its unity could be threatened.
