Many Africans have deep religious affiliations and seek solace and hope from pastors and churches. The stunning rise in dishonest pastors taking advantage of weaker followers, however, is a serious issue that is tainting this faith.
Situations where self-styled pastors misuse their power to manipulate and mistreat women in their congregations are among the worst. Pastors have reportedly offered miracles or blessings in exchange for money or, worse, unethical behaviour.
In one well-known case, a pastor used the promise that he could “cleanse” women of their afflictions through secret rites to trick them into undertaking actions that were completely at odds with their religious convictions.
These incidents have provoked outrage, and critics are accusing these individuals of taking advantage of those who are looking for spiritual help.
Many followers overlook questionable behaviour because of these preachers’ enticing charismatic style and boasts of life-changing miracles.
A vicious cycle of dependency results from congregations’ reliance on pastors for “spiritual cures” that offer momentary emotional comfort but no long-term solutions.
As they seek answers to problems that these pastors are unable to truly address, many followers—many of whom are financially challenged—are particularly vulnerable.
