The family of legendary highlife musician Mike Ejeagha has disclosed the cause of his death.

The renowned artist, best known for his hit song Gwo gwo ngwo, passed away on Friday evening at the age of 95.

In an interview with Vanguard newspaper on Saturday, his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, revealed that the iconic musician died after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

According to Emma, his father passed away at 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, where he had been receiving treatment. He noted that the illness had affected his father since 2006.

“Papa died on Friday, at 8 p.m. and his body has been deposited in the mortuary. I was with him during his final moments.”

Emma also mentioned that his father had made a specific request not to have his body embalmed or left in the mortuary for an extended period.

Mike Ejeagha’s 1983 track Gwo gwo ngwo saw renewed popularity in 2024 after comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter featured it in a viral global dance challenge.
