Mr. Kenneth Ifeakandu, a yam farmer in Obeledu town, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, earned five hundred thousand Naira for harvesting ninety-five kilos of yam in the community.

In the 2024 Obeledu New Yam Festival, Ifeakandu from Okofia village entered the competition to display his produce.

The delighted farmer told local reporters that he would use the award money he received for growing the heaviest yam to improve his land and increase productivity the next year.

He said, “The prize money is a morale booster to invest more into agriculture, I will expand my scope and return here next year by the grace of God with super huge harvests to show my gratitude to God.”

In his remarks, Obeledu Progress Union President General Ken Echendu said that the agricultural exhibition was purposefully included in the new yam festival to inspire more people to become farmers.

“People have this impression that Anaocha has white land which is not fertile enough to support agriculture but we are changing that erroneous narrative.

In addition, Echendu urged all Obeledu citizens to back his executives, despite his assurances that the community will see better times ahead.

During the customary yam cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, Igwe Obeledu, His Royal Highness, Igwe AC Oragwam, Ezeoranyelu III, expressed gratitude to God for bestowing upon his community a plentiful harvest.

The citizens of Ndi-Obeledu, as well as HRH Igwe Oragwam, were asked to uphold peace, which he considered to be the cornerstone of progress and development.

Ezeoranyelu III nostalgically recalled that his community was the place of origin of his state’s yam competition, which has garnered worldwide recognition.

The success of the event was credited to the good ties among the Obeledu people by Mr. Ikechukwu Okafor, Secretary of the Obeledu Media Department.

“People are happy, farms and other endeavours of the people are doing well, an indication that God is with us, 2024 edition of Obeledu new yam festival is particularly unique because of the level of participation of the people,” he noted.

He emphasised that the Obeledu community’s present Executive Council would take the community to the promised land.

He, however urged everyone to keep backing the Town Union’s leadership as well as the town’s foremost traditional ruler.

The entire community was congratulated on a successful trip by Mr. Collins Nwabuwanne, the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs and Chieftaincy Matters, who graced the occasion.

He mentioned that he has kept going to new yam festivals around the state to observe how the local communities are embracing the agricultural revolution spearheaded by Governor Soludo’s administration.

In actuality, Mr. Nwabuwanne stated, the Obeledu community has succeeded greatly and will receive government backing to pursue other agricultural endeavours.

He exhorted the other Anambra towns and communities in Anambra State to borrow a leaf from Obeledu.
