The Edo State House of Assembly has strongly decried the rising incidents of kidnappings and ongoing violence across the state, expressing concern that farmers have become the most severely affected by the crisis.

During a plenary session held on Monday in Benin City, lawmakers passed a resolution urging the state government and relevant security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing threat of abductions, particularly in Etsako East Local Government Area and other parts of the state.

The resolution was adopted following a motion of urgent public concern presented by Hon. Kingsley Ugabi, who represents Etsako East Constituency. In his submission, Ugabi highlighted the worsening security situation in his area, stating that criminal activities, especially kidnappings, have forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands.

He emphasized that those involved in agriculture were bearing the brunt of the insecurity, with many too afraid to continue their farming due to the risk of being attacked.

“The current spate of kidnappings was already posing a major threat to food security in the country,” Ugabi said, stressing the need for urgent intervention.

Other members of the Assembly also voiced deep concern over the widespread insecurity, pointing to similar issues in their own constituencies, including frequent cases of kidnapping and armed robbery.

In response, the House called for immediate action to combat the rising insecurity and proposed that community policing efforts be enhanced. It also urged for the implementation of additional security strategies to tackle the issue of kidnappings throughout the state.
