Farotimi makes striking claim about Nigeria’s judiciary

Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has claimed that Nigeria’s judiciary was in a better state during military rule than it is under the current democratic system.

Farotimi made the assertion in a statement shared on social media on Sunday.

The activist argued that the judiciary has lost much of the institutional integrity and credibility it previously commanded during the military era.

He compared the present judicial system with the period of military rule, when successive military administrations frequently disregarded court orders and relied on ouster clauses to prevent certain actions from being subjected to judicial review.

Despite those limitations, Farotimi maintained that the judiciary during that period still retained a level of institutional standing that, in his assessment, is missing today.

“When our judiciary was worthy of the name, in the heyday of the military bandits that ruled Nigeria, the rulers routinely ignored court orders and ruled with ouster clauses,” Farotimi said.

The activist further criticised the present judiciary, describing it as largely complicit and alleging that it now operates on what he referred to as a corrupt mandate.

Farotimi has consistently advocated judicial and institutional reforms in Nigeria, while raising concerns about democratic institutions, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
