The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have requested an additional 90 days from a U.S. District Court to delay the release of documents linked to an alleged drug-related case involving President Bola Tinubu.

This investigation reportedly dates back to the 1990s.

The extension request was included in a joint status update filed on Thursday with the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia.

The legal action stems from several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) applications submitted by Aaron Greenspan, a U.S.-based legal transparency advocate and the founder of the platform PlainSite.

Greenspan is seeking access to files related to a drug trafficking network believed to have operated in Chicago.

In the documents, President Tinubu is named along with several individuals, including Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele.

Earlier, Judge Beryl Howell had instructed the FBI and DEA to report on their progress and provide any releasable documents by May 2, 2025.

But in their most recent submission, the two agencies stated they require more time to finish reviewing the materials.

The report reads, “Aaron Greenspan (“Plaintiff”) and Defendants Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the only remaining defendants in this case, respectfully submit the following joint status report proposing a schedule to govern further proceedings, pursuant to the Court’s Order of April 8, 2025 (ECF No. 47).

“Pursuant to the court’s order, the defendants, FBI and DEA must search for and produce non-exempt records responsive to the plaintiff’s FOIA requests (FBI Requests Nos. 1588244-000 and 1593615- 000, and DEA Request Nos. 22-00892-F and 24-00201-F).

“The FBI and DEA have initiated their searches for responsive, non-exempt, reasonably segregable portions of records requested by the plaintiff and anticipate completing their searches in ninety days.”

Greenspan has expressed strong opposition to the delay, arguing that the FBI and DEA have been stalling the process for years, even though certain documents have already been identified.

He has suggested a significantly shorter deadline for the completion of the document release.
