The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has announced an indefinite strike in Abuja over unresolved issues surrounding the promotion and career advancement of teachers.
The industrial action is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the FCT Administration, FCTA.
The NLC had issued the ultimatum to the FCTA on September 8, 2026, calling for the resolution of long-standing welfare concerns affecting teachers in the territory.
In a communique signed by the NLC FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Knabayi S. Adalo, the union rejected the FCTA’s response to its ultimatum, describing it as “ambiguous, dismissive and totally unacceptable”.
The major point of contention is the FCTA’s application of a “vacancy clause,” which makes teachers’ promotions dependent on the availability of vacant positions.
The NLC maintained that teachers are specifically employed by the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, FCT UBEB, and the FCT Secondary Education Board, FCT SEB, to perform teaching duties and are therefore different from core civil servants or pool staff.
The union argued that promotion schemes tied to vacancies were designed for pool officers, stressing that the continued application of the policy had resulted in prolonged career stagnation and declining morale among teachers.
