The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a major cleanup and security operation at the well-known UTC Complex and surrounding areas in Abuja, removing refuse, unauthorized shelters, and structures allegedly used by criminals as hideouts.

During the operation, the Director of Development Control, TPL Mukhtar Galadima, explained that this effort is part of a broader citywide initiative aimed at improving sanitation and enhancing safety, as directed by the FCT Security Council.

He said the cleanup began with the removal of a waste site before proceeding into the main UTC premises, where individuals suspected of criminal activity were believed to be operating.

Galadima noted that the area cleared falls within the designated transit corridor of the Abuja Master Plan and will soon be secured with fencing to avoid illegal occupation.

“This area has not yet been developed, but it is being maintained and protected against any instance of land grabbing,” he said.

Responding to online rumors suggesting the demolition of Panorama Garden in Zone 3, Galadima clarified that the park remains intact.

He stated that prior notifications for clearance were issued as early as October 2023, with follow-up actions in 2024 and again in February 2025. “The playground, gym, lounge, and all other park facilities are still intact. Only makeshift structures and scavengers’ shanties were removed,” he stated.

The Director of Security for the FCTA, represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, said the operation specifically targeted locations known to harbor criminal activity.

He revealed that since the start of the cleanup, areas that were cleared have recorded a noticeable drop in crime, according to recent data from the FCT Police Command.

“Since we started this operation one week ago, crime rates within the cleared locations have reduced drastically,” Olumuji noted, adding that several machetes used in attacks were recovered.

He added that individuals detained during the operation are undergoing profiling for possible prosecution, and that “Operation Sweep Abuja” is actively monitoring the movement of displaced suspects throughout the city.
