The Federal Government has distributed relief and empowerment packages to women and vulnerable families in Benue State, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of insecurity and economic hardship.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, presented the items on Saturday in Makurdi on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. This was contained in a statement signed by her media aide, Mr. Jonathan Eze, on Sunday.

The intervention comes amid recurring violence in Benue, where recent reports documented fresh killings and mass displacement in communities such as Logo, Ukum, and Guma Local Government Areas, forcing hundreds into makeshift camps.

The Minister was warmly received at the Air Force Airstrip in Makurdi by women and girls dressed in colourful traditional attire, waving Nigerian flags in her honour. She later proceeded to the Government House, where she was welcomed by Governor Hyacinth Alia, Deputy Governor Sir Sam Ode, and other top state officials.

Speaking during the gathering, the Minister explained that the initiative was in direct compliance with the President’s directive.

“In line with the directive of President Tinubu and the First Lady, we are putting money directly into the hands of women so they can be economically empowered and contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.

She further revealed the details of the relief package, stating:

“The government is delivering 400 bags of rice, 20 bales of Ankara fabrics, fairly used clothes, pepper-grinding machines, and tailoring machines to support women and vulnerable families.”

According to her, twenty women farmers were also empowered with funds.

“Each of the twenty women farmers has been given one million naira. An advance payment of ₦500,000 has already been disbursed, while the balance will be paid later in the year,” she announced

In addition, cash support was extended to women’s groups and survivors of gender-based violence. The Minister also conveyed the goodwill message of President Tinubu, highlighting ongoing federal programmes on economic empowerment, social investment, and women in leadership.

Governor Alia, in his remarks, commended the gesture.

“This intervention is timely, and it reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of our people. My administration will continue to prioritize the empowerment of women and the support of internally displaced persons,” he assured.

In recognition of her efforts, Tiv traditional leaders decorated the Minister with traditional attire and conferred on her the title of Dooshima of Benue, meaning the love of Benue people.

The event ended with gratitude from residents and community leaders, who described the intervention as a lifeline for the state during its ongoing security and economic challenges
