The legal struggle surrounding the troubled legislator has intensified with the filing of a new criminal case against suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Federal Government.

Just a few weeks after a similar charge (CR/297/25) was brought before the FCT High Court, the new charge, designated FHC/ABJ/CR/195/25, was filed in the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 22, 2025.

The allegations in both cases are related to the same remarks made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, which the government says disparaged former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The new Federal High Court lawsuit is structured under Sections 24(1)(b) and 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition) Act, 2024 (as amended), whereas the FCT High Court case is based on Section 392 of the Penal Code (criminal defamation).

The senator’s online remarks, according to the administration, have the potential to “damage the public image” of Bello and Akpabio.

All of the accusations have been refuted by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has described them as politically driven attempts to silence critics.

“This is a textbook example of forum shopping,” a senior legal expert commented. “You cannot prosecute the same offence in two courts hoping for a conviction in either.”

The senator is set to be arraigned before the Federal High Court on June 30, 2025, after the FCT High Court granted him bail on June 19, 2025.
