A 20-year-old final-year Computer Science student, Joshua Lawson, has died by suicide after being suspended from Babcock University for alleged examination malpractice. The university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, confirmed that Lawson was found guilty of examination misconduct and handed a one-year academic suspension. “He faced the university disciplinary committee for examination malpractice; he was found guilty and handed a one-year academic suspension,” Suleiman said.
Students and Nigerians have accused the university management of failing to give Lawson a fair hearing and suspending him unjustly, contributing to his death. A social media post claimed the university management ignored Lawson’s appeal emails for weeks and laughed in his face during a meeting. “After weeks and weeks of not responding to the appeal mail sent by him, they eventually sent a response yesterday for him to come today. He gets there and they laugh in his face, letting him know that if he is still standing his ground, he is wasting his time. Wicked lots,” the user wrote
Suleiman maintained that Lawson was given a fair hearing, stating, “He was given an opportunity for a fair hearing according to the university’s rules.” The university’s rules outline strict penalties for academic misconduct, including suspension or expulsion, following a fair hearing.

Reactions from Students
– “How can someone be so close to the finish line just a month to their convocation, and suddenly, everything gets ripped away because of an ‘exam misconduct’ case? That’s not just punishment… that’s destruction,” one student lamented.
– “If this school does not stop some of their stupid policies or actions, it will continue getting worse!!! Like whyyyy…??,” another student added.
Lawson’s death has sparked widespread grief and outrage, with many calling for more humane policies within the institution and condemning the impact of strict penalties on students’ mental health
