The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), which emphasizes its function as an impartial policy organization, has justified its decision to keep quiet about current political developments.
The forum clarified in a statement released on Saturday under the title “NGF Clarifies Silence on Political Matters,” that adopting partisan stances could cause division among its members, who come from various political backgrounds.
The clarification comes after Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and elected members of the State House of Assembly were suspended for six months after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency.
The NGF said in a statement signed by its Director General, Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, that the forum is more concerned with governance and policy issues than party disputes, albeit not specifically mentioning the circumstances in Rivers.
“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has received media inquiries requesting it to comment on some recent political developments in the country,” the statement read.
“The Forum wishes to clarify that it is an umbrella body for subnational governments, aimed at promoting unified policy positions and collaborating with relevant stakeholders in pursuit of sustainable socioeconomic growth and the well-being of the people.”
“As a technical and policy hub comprising governors elected on different platforms, the body elects to steer clear of taking positions that may alienate members with varying political interests.”
Shittu pointed out that the forum’s cohesiveness has been challenged by previous political divisions, thus it is crucial to steer clear of divisive political positions.
He did, however, reassure Nigerians that the NGF is still dedicated to addressing governance concerns that impact public welfare and economic progress.
“Regardless, the Forum is known for its bold positions on governance and general policy matters of profound consequence, such as wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare, among others,” Shittu stated.
In addition to urging public and media awareness, the NGF expressed confidence that party disagreements would be resolved by the democratic institutions and crisis resolution procedures now in place.
