The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that the National Identification Number (NIN) given by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will henceforth automatically act as an individual Nigerian’s Tax Identification Number (TIN).

The news was issued on Monday as part of a public awareness campaign for the new tax regulations, which the FIRS posted on X.

The Service also claimed that registered businesses will no longer require a separate Tax ID. Under the amended method, their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will be used as their official tax identifier.

The clarification comes amid widespread anxiety about sections in the new tax legislation that require a Tax ID for certain activities, such as bank account ownership.

According to the FIRS, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which is slated to take effect in January 2026, requires the usage of a Tax ID for certain transactions.

The Service stressed that this need is not new, stating that it has existed since the Finance Act of 2019 and is now reinforced by the NTAA.

“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the Service said.

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity.”

The FIRS stated that the new approach intends to simplify taxpayer identification, remove duplication, combat tax fraud, and maintain justice by requiring that all persons with taxable income contribute their fair part.

The Service also asked Nigerians to disregard any misconceptions regarding the reform, stressing them that the revamped tax structure is intended to improve efficiency and transparency in tax administration.
