Senator Tinubu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the program with an additional 500 empowerment items, bringing the total number of beneficiaries in Lagos State to 1,000 women. Over 18,500 women across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones will ultimately benefit from the initiative. Empowerment items distributed include gas cookers, grinding machines, chest freezers, generators, and hair dryers to equip women with necessary tools and resources for successful businesses.
The newly commissioned industrial leather hub is expected to boost the state’s leather industry, create jobs, and position Lagos as a leading center for industrial innovation. The hub will provide export earnings in excess of $250 million annually when fully operational and create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the first three years, with 70% reserved for women and youth.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Senator Tinubu for her decades-long commitment to good governance and women’s development, urging the beneficiaries to resist the temptation of selling their empowerment items. The ceremony was described as sowing the seed that “will grow into forests of possibility”.
The First Lady emphasized that empowering women is central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG-5 on gender equality and SDG-8 on decent work and economic growth. She urged the beneficiaries to use the resources judiciously to grow their businesses and contribute meaningfully to national development.
