Military personnel detained in connection with the thwarted coup, according to Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), were aware of their actions’ repercussions and prepared to confront the fallout.
This statement was made by Musa during his appearance on the Turkish broadcaster TRT World, where he affirmed that the accused individuals would undergo a fair trial and have access to legal representation of their choice.
He stated that the government would take care of the families of those accused of attempting a coup.
“They must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families.
“But even at that, the government is ensuring that their families are treated fairly.
“Their family members are not left alone. The government is making sure that their wives and children are looked after.
“The perpetrators already know the repercussion of their action, and I’m sure they are ready to face the wrath,” he said.
ZINGTIE recalls that the 16 implicated officers, including a Brigadier-General and Colonel, were arrested in October 2025 by the defence headquarters, DHQ.
On January 26, the DHQ confirmed that there was a scheme to remove President Bola Tinubu.
The military stated that the scheme revealed in late September 2025 through collaborative intelligence from the army, Department of State Services (DSS), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) supposedly entailed plans to murder Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking government officials, as well as detain senior military leaders.
