Food crisis: United Nations send warning to Tinubu-led FG

An arm of the UN called the Food and Agriculture Organisation has issued a warning that, due to food insecurity, 80–82 million Nigerians could experience acute hunger by 2030.

This was revealed during the recent CropWatch launch in Abuja by the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Humanitarian Coordinator, Taofiq Braimoh.

Citing a recent survey, he claims that 22 million Nigerians will experience food insecurity in 2023.

“The government of Nigeria, in collaboration with others, conducts an annual food security survey. This year’s results are alarming: approximately 22 million Nigerians will face food insecurity in 2023, and around 80-82 million are at risk of severe food insecurity by 2030,” he said.

This occurs as the National Bureau of Statistics reports that in May 2024, food inflation in Nigeria increased to 40.66 percent.

According to the research, the prices of staple items including rice, beans, garlic, yam, and others increased by at least 130%.

The development has made millions of Nigerians access to food and the misery index much worse.

Despite the fact that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his economic team recently declared a food insecurity emergency and repeatedly promised relief, the issue has continued.
