The United States Government has announced a commitment of $32.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support food and nutrition assistance for hundreds of thousands of Nigerians affected by conflict and displacement.

In a statement released by the US Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday, the mission explained that the funding would allow WFP Nigeria to reach approximately 764,205 vulnerable individuals across the Northeast and Northwest regions, which continue to grapple with insecurity and humanitarian crises.

“World Food Program Nigeria, with US Government’s contribution of $32.5m, will provide food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons across conflict-affected areas,” the statement read.

“With the US Government’s donation, the World Food Programme Nigeria will provide food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 beneficiaries across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria. This includes complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls and 43,235 children through electronic food vouchers

The package, according to the embassy, will cover both general food distributions and targeted nutritional interventions. Beneficiaries include pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as children under five, who will receive specialised nutrition support aimed at preventing malnutrition.

The US Mission noted that the intervention comes at a critical time, with millions of Nigerians in conflict-affected communities struggling to meet their most basic food and health needs.

This commitment builds on previous support through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). On December 18, 2024, reports said that USAID dismissed recent media claims misrepresenting it’s agricultural programmes in Nigeria, stressing that all it’s initiatives operate transparently and in line with Nigerian laws.

In it’s statement, the US Mission emphasised the achievements of its agricultural collaboration with Nigeria, stating that USAID programmes have supported over five million farmers since 2019, significantly boosting food production and strengthening rural economies.
