Following the passing of Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry, the chairman of the Badagry Local Government Area, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, announced a seven-day period of mourning.

With the consent of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the news was made on Tuesday in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine.

“With the approval of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, I officially announce with profound sorrow the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom.

“Akran peacefully joined his ancestors on Monday, Jan. 12, after a long, illustrious, dignified, and impactful reign devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich and enduring cultural heritage,” the LG chairman said.

After a lengthy reign characterized by harmony, serenity, and commitment to the preservation of Badagry’s cultural legacy, the esteemed monarch passed away on Monday.

According to Hunpe, the late Akran was a revered guardian of tradition who was instrumental in tying the kingdom’s past to its future and giving his subjects moral direction.

“In solemn recognition of the life, service, and enduring legacy of our revered monarch and paramount ruler, I hereby declare seven (7) days of mourning, during which the people of Badagry are enjoined to reflect on his selfless leadership, timeless values, and lifelong devotion to Badagry Local Government, Lagos State, and Nigeria at large,” Hunpe added.

He urged the people of Badagry to consider the monarch’s leadership and principles over the course of the seven days of mourning, which was established in honor of his life of service and enduring legacy.

Additionally, the Council of Obas and Chiefs, the people of Badagry and Lagos State, and the royal family received condolences from the council chairman.
