Brig. Gen. John Sura (Rtd), a former candidate for Plateau State governorship in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has resigned from the party.

In a statement sent to his fans on his Facebook page, Gen. Sura, one of the candidates for the governorship in the 2023 primary election that resulted in incumbent Governor Caleb Mutfwang as the flag bearer, announced his departure from the PDP.

In the message, Gen. Sura pledged to call a meeting to address his supporters, referred to as the “Sura Club and the Liberation Family,” about the reasons behind his departure from the party, stating that it is his moral obligation to personally notify them.

“It has become imperative that I address you directly as my compatriots because you have been there with me since the early days when I joined politics and ran for the 2023 gubernatorial elections till today,” he wrote.

“You might have heard the news of my resignation from the PDP. I owe you a moral duty to address you directly although I have discussed this issue with some of you personally, I thought you were the first to know formally.

“I will arrange and fix a date to invite you as a Political Family to discuss further on the Reasons that necessitated my resignation and a collective resolution be taken,” he stated.

Following a wave of defections, including the recent departure of Chief Letep Dabang, the Director General of the Mutfwang/Piyo Campaign Organization in the 2023 elections, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month, Gen. Sura’s resignation from the PDP has further weakened the party.
