Trees Lead of One Acre Fund, Nigeria, Zainab Haruna, stated, “In 2025, One Acre Fund, Nigeria aims to reach 471,700 smallholder farmers across three states with 12.5 million tree seedlings.” She added, “We are offering this programme because we have seen changes on our lands as climate change continues to have negative effects on them by damaging nutrients within the soil and affecting rainfalls, among other challenges that our farmers face on the regular basis.”

The programme is part of One Acre Fund’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s agroforestry transformation. Haruna explained that tree planting is one of the avenues the organization uses to support farmers to continue to feed themselves, their families, and enjoy financial stability.

“If the trees are well-nurtured, the farmers will be able to harvest them when they reach maturity and enjoy their numerous environmental benefits, which include protecting their farmlands from erosion,” Haruna said. “They will also be able to sell some of the trees for furniture purposes

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Agriculture, Umar Tunga, represented by Lidia Kyari, commended One Acre Fund, Nigeria, for the empowerment program. Tunga reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that address climate change.

Programme Manager, Nasarawa State Agricultural Development Programme, Umar Nuhu, noted, “By planting trees, the negative effects of climate change would be greatly reduced.” He urged beneficiaries to plant and nurture the seedlings, saying, “I want to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to One Acre Fund, Nigeria, for the empowerment programme. I also urge the beneficiaries not to sell the tree seedlings, but make good use of them to improve their livelihoods.”

Each beneficiary received 27 tree seedlings, which are to be planted around their farmlands and homes. Beneficiary Hadiza Adamu thanked One Acre Fund, promising to utilize the seedlings to improve livelihoods.

The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of the beneficiaries, providing them with a sustainable source of income and helping to mitigate the effects of climate change in the state
