The Samueli Foundation has announced a significant investment of $15 million in nonprofits in Orange County, California, to address gaps in coverage. In partnership with the Orange County Community Foundation, the foundation conducted a comprehensive survey of over 600 local nonprofits to identify key challenges facing the industry.

The survey revealed that leadership development and project financing were major concerns for nonprofits in the region. A staggering 86% of respondents agreed that collaboration enhances impact, but structural and financial barriers limit partnerships. Furthermore, 82% of nonprofits found it “moderately” to “very” difficult to access multiyear funding

To address these concerns, the Samueli Foundation has allocated the $15 million funding into three grants of $5 million each. The first grant will support a five-year investment in the Leading for Impact and Leadership Accelerator program. The second grant will establish the annual Build OC Fund, providing grants of up to $1 million to support capital projects. The third grant will fund the annual Breakaway Fund grantmaking initiative.

According to Lindsey Spindle, president of Samueli Family Philanthropies, “Thanks to the nonprofit leaders who engaged with the research team, this report provides an unvarnished look at the current needs of the nonprofit sector. It challenges our assumptions as a philanthropic funder.”

Spindle emphasised the foundation’s commitment to using data-driven insights to inform its giving practices. “We intend to use the data-driven insights from this report to further transform our annual and longer-term giving—and we hope other philanthropists find the report useful in examining their giving practices.
