The Oando Foundation has launched the Green Youth Upskilling Programme (GYUP), a sustainable enterprise training initiative aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The programme, implemented in partnership with the Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre and technical training providers, will equip 25 young Nigerians with technical expertise and business acumen in renewable energy and waste management.

The nine-month training programme will focus on developing a new generation of green entrepreneurs capable of creating small-scale businesses that promote job creation and environmental sustainability. According to the foundation, the programme received over 8,000 applications, and 25 outstanding individuals were selected to become the inaugural cohort of Green Youth Champions

Head of Oando Foundation, Tonia Uduimoh, said, “The Green Youth Upskilling Programme was developed in response to two pressing needs – empowering our youth and driving climate action.” She added, “With 12.5 per cent of Nigerian youth not in education, employment, or training, and the potential for over two million green jobs by 2030, this programme bridges that opportunity gap.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre, Bankole Oloruntoba, described the programme as a practical step toward building Nigeria’s green workforce. “The GYUP is not just a program; it is a catalyst for action, helping us move beyond conversations about unemployment toward building sustainable green jobs that will endure,” he said.

The GYUP is the first major initiative under the Oando Foundation’s PLANET component of its LEARNOVATE strategy, which focuses on green skills development alongside foundational literacy and advocacy in education. The programme aims to train more youth in climate-smart skills, expand Nigeria’s circular economy, and contribute to the country’s environmental sustainability goals.
