Save El Rey, a Chico, California-based nonprofit dedicated to revamping the state’s oldest theatre, has received a significant boost with a $2.5 million pledge from the Lupine Legacy Foundation. The funding, announced on Instagram, is specifically earmarked for restoration efforts as the organisation works to raise the $15 million needed to purchase the historic El Rey building.

The building, constructed in 1922, has been on the market for over a year and is considered the oldest theatre in California. Save El Rey expressed its gratitude for the pledge, stating, “This incredible show of support speaks volumes about what our community has already done to bring attention to this iconic space.
The nonprofit remains hopeful that additional contributions will enable it to complete the purchase and restore the theatre to its former glory. With this pledge, Save El Rey is one step closer to preserving a piece of California’s rich cultural heritage
