The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed reports suggesting that its vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the party.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the claims as unfounded speculations designed to damage the image of the NDC.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Saturday night, Director alleged that the rumours were being fueled by the ruling party and certain opposition elements seeking to undermine the party’s progress.

He said: “At no time did our leader, Kwankwaso threatened to leave the party, those were just conjectures and media speculations trying to demarket the party and we know where they are coming from.

“Apart from media speculation and those who do not want us to succeed, there were instances in a particular constituency in Delta State where an incumbent allegedly supported five or six aspirants to run against Collins Edema.”

There had been widespread reports claiming that the former Kano State governor was considering exiting the NDC following controversies surrounding the replacement of some candidates in Kano State.

The speculation gained momentum after the party reportedly substituted several candidates initially submitted by the Kwankwasiyya bloc over allegations of non-compliance with an existing power-sharing arrangement.

According to a document signed by the Kano State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the adjustments were made to align with an earlier agreement on the sharing of party offices and elective positions between the established NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya faction.

However, the party has now insisted that reports linking Kwankwaso to any threat of defection remain false and should be disregarded.
