In a historic decision that has rekindled discussions about accountability and corruption, former government official Balthazar Egonga, was given an 18-year prison sentence for embezzling more than 1 billion francs in public funds.

Many have questioned whether the punishment is appropriate given the evidence, which revealed his extravagant spending on luxuries and extramarital affairs.

As taxpayers suffered, his misadventures turned into a social media show, with many people denouncing his careless actions.

The fact that none of the ladies he showered presents on supported him during his trial, despite his well-known relationships, served as a reminder of the hollowness of his illicit wealth.

Because embezzlers frequently receive low penalties in comparison to the severity of their crimes, the case has aroused criticism about the lax anti-corruption laws in many African countries.

Critics contend that 18 years is an excessively light sentence for such a large theft, particularly considering that regular people are subject to harsher penalties for less serious infractions.

“This is why corruption persists—the consequences are never severe enough, If stealing billions only gets you a few years in jail, what’s stopping the next official from doing the same?” stated one activist.

Given the harm caused by his theft, many individuals and anti-graft activists feel that Egonga should have received a considerably heavier punishment. To guarantee that stolen money is returned to the public, some have urged for stronger asset recovery regulations.

In the meantime, his precipitous decline in popularity has turned into a warning. The same women who used to lavish him with gifts and cash have disappeared, leaving him to deal with the fallout on his own.
