Motorists in Gombe State are being warned by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to exercise caution, as a dense seasonal dust haze is obscuring major roads and diminishing visibility.
The Gombe State Sector Command cautioned that the current weather conditions have produced dangerous driving circumstances, as reduced visibility and slower reactions heighten the chances of road traffic accidents.
The Command, in a statement endorsed by Superintendent Route Commander Janet Kassa, the Sector Public Education Officer, emphasized that reckless behavior on the road would be intolerable, especially during times of diminished visibility.
Samson Kaura, the Sector Commander for Gombe State, stated that the dust haze should not be regarded as a normal seasonal event, but rather as a significant danger to road safety.
He warned that driving at high speed under such circumstances could be deadly.
“At such times, speeding becomes even more perilous,” Kaura cautioned, imploring drivers to reduce their speed, follow prescribed speed limits diligently, and adopt defensive driving techniques in order to prevent tragedies that could be avoided.
The Command instructed drivers to make certain that their vehicles are ready for the severe weather conditions. Drivers were urged to ensure that headlights, tail lights, and brake lights are working properly and turned on as needed, even when it is daytime, in order to enhance visibility for other road users.
Motorists were also urged to enhance their following distances, maintain clean windscreens, and steer clear of hazardous actions like improper overtaking and driving while distracted.
The FRSC urged the public to make safety their top priority and to comply with traffic regulations until visibility returns to normal throughout the state.
