Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed that his administration uncovered suspected cases of fake workers during a verification exercise in the state.

The governor made the disclosure on Monday while speaking at the inauguration of the Omademe Road in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Fubara said some individuals who claimed to be workers presented six-month bank statements as part of the verification process.

He explained that investigations into the records showed that only genuine workers were receiving salaries through the state payroll.

According to the governor, his administration established a commission to undertake a comprehensive verification of workers after discovering concerns over the size of the state’s salary payroll.

Fubara said the issue of a bloated workforce had existed before he assumed office and that the Local Government Service Commission had already begun addressing the matter.

He, however, noted that changes within the commission affected the process before a new commission was constituted.

The governor also urged residents and officials not to interpret every development in the state through the lens of politics or his relationship with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

He stressed that governance issues should be addressed based on facts and the interests of Rivers State rather than being constantly linked to political disagreements.

He said: “When I came in, even before I returned from my sabbatical leave, we already had issues of a bloated salary payroll. The then Local Government Service Commission was working on it, but unfortunately we all know what happened and a new commission was reconstituted before we came in.
