Omowunmi Fatoki, a 25-year-old first-class graduate of Industrial Chemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, shares her inspiring story of perseverance, discipline, and determination.
The Journey Begins
Fatoki gained admission to the university in 2018 but resumed in the 2019 academic session. Initially, she had applied to study medicine and pharmacy but wasn’t admitted due to her poor performance in biology. Undeterred, she decided to pursue industrial chemistry, a course that matched her strengths.
The Drive for Excellence
Fatoki revealed that she had always aimed for a first-class degree. “From my first semester, I was determined to achieve a first class,” she said. Despite facing challenges, including a disappointing GPA of 4.36 in her second semester, Fatoki persevered and worked harder to maintain her first-class status.
Balancing Academics and Life
Fatoki attributed her success to her ability to balance academics with other aspects of her life. “I believe there’s a time for everything,” she said. She allocated time for cooking, reading, and sleeping, ensuring she got at least six hours of sleep daily.
Study Techniques and Habits
Fatoki’s study techniques included creating her own notes, reviewing them consistently, and using online resources to supplement her learning. She also emphasised the importance of time management and surrounding oneself with supportive people.
Overcoming Challenges
Fatoki faced several challenges, including the loss of her father at a young age and the responsibility of supporting herself financially through private tutoring. However, she remained focused and determined, crediting her mother and siblings for their unwavering support.
Advice for Students
Fatoki offered words of wisdom to students aiming for academic excellence. “Stay focused, manage your time effectively, and surround yourself with people who encourage and inspire you,” she advised. “Dedicate extra effort to your weak areas and never lose sight of your goals.”
Future Plans
Fatoki plans to pursue a PhD or Master’s degree, leveraging her first-class degree as a stepping stone to further academic recognition. With her sights set on academic excellence, Fatoki is an inspiration to students and young adults alike.
Passion for Organic Chemistry
Fatoki’s love for organic chemistry is evident in her enthusiasm for the subject. “I particularly love organic chemistry,” she said. “It fascinates me because of its practical applications and how it connects to real-life processes.”
Challenges in the Educational System
Fatoki acknowledged the challenges in the Nigerian educational system, citing inadequate infrastructure and resources as major hindrances to academic excellence. “To some extent, the Nigerian educational system supports academic excellence, but there are significant challenges that hinder its full potential,” she said.
Credit to Her Mother
Fatoki credited her mother, an auxiliary nurse and trader, for her unwavering support and dedication to her education. “I want to give a lot of credit to my mom,” she said. “She has been a wonderful and strong woman, raising four children on her own.”
Final Words of Advice
As Fatoki looked to the future, she offered final words of advice to students striving for academic excellence. “Education is not a scam,” she said. “Focus on your studies, know what you’re good at, and develop skills related to your course of study. Remain committed, and you will achieve your goals.
