The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Nnenna Otti, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to zero tolerance for sexual harassment and gender-based violence. Otti stated this when she received members of Alliances for Africa (AfA), a non-governmental feminist organisation, on an advocacy visit to deepen awareness and proffer prevention strategies against the menace.

The FUTO VC appreciated AfA for their commitment and partnership with the institution, stressing that ending sexual harassment cases would enhance general safety and boost academic excellence. “Aside several steps initiated and implemented by the school towards addressing the menace, the University is ready to partner with all efforts aimed at achieving zero cases of sexual harassment in the school,” she said

The team lead for AfA on the project, Barr. Ella Osuji, said the visit aimed to engage Vice-Chancellors directly to take stronger action against sexual harassment. “Sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions remains underreported, largely due to weak reporting systems and a culture of impunity,” Osuji said. “This advocacy visit seeks to… secure clear commitments toward children with cancer, including making cancer treatment for children free and including it in the national health insurance scheme,” Ezeukwu added.

The visit culminated in the presentation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) draft to the FUTO VC for review and subsequent signing. The MoU aims to strengthen mechanisms for a safe environment for academic activities and foster a culture of accountability.

The FUTO VC’s commitment to partnering with AfA on this project underscores the institution’s dedication to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all members of the university community.
