Senator Ajibola Basiru, the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) national secretary, has played down worries about potential repercussions following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the party’s national chairman.

Basiru explicitly stated that Ganduje’s departure does not indicate a problem inside the party’s ranks during a media conference hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, a group that represents journalists in the South-West.

“If you look at the statement issued by the party, he was commended for the efforts he made in repositioning the party. Under his watch, we have more states coming into the party and administratively, the party was strengthened since our joint election as the National Chairman and the National Secretary on 3rd August, 2023,” Basiru said.

Amid rumors that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, was considering defecting to the APC, Ganduje resigned from his role as head of state.

However, Basiru denied that any internal friction was growing as a result of the noise.

“And this is not the first time that the party’s official has resigned. It is upon the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman and Senator Iyiola Omisore that we assumed office on 3rd August 2023. So the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Umar Gandunje does not portend any crisis. It is speculation,” he added.

According to Basiru, the party has remained strong under the direction of dedicated members, and part of Ganduje’s legacy has been to spread the party’s influence throughout the nation.

The APC leader also addressed a rising rumor in Osun State political circles that PDP stalwart Governor Ademola Adeleke might be thinking about defecting to the APC in the same sentence. He responded without holding back.

“Adeleke is not joining our party. I know that as of today, decamping is not on board. Although APC is a beautiful bride for anybody that wants to join, I must say here that as a party man and an established politician, I would say that I am one of the people that is extremely loyal to Mr President,” Basiru affirmed.
