The resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje from his role as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been linked to speculations about former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, potentially joining the ruling party.
On Friday, Ganduje officially submitted his resignation to the APC’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola, in Abuja.
While initial reports cited health concerns as the reason for his exit, emerging information suggests there may be deeper political motivations behind the move.
An insider familiar with the situation revealed on Friday night that Ganduje’s decision was influenced by plans for Kwankwaso to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.
According to the source, Kwankwaso is expected to join APC “any moment from now, except he changes his mind again but as of today, the arrangement has been made for that to happen”.
“It looks like they are sworn enemies, the defection of Kwankwaso is very important to the APC, especially as 2027 is concerned, but Ganduje has vowed that he won’t welcome him into the party so he has to step aside”, the source added.
There have also been rumors circulating that President Bola Tinubu may consider replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima with Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 elections.
Some APC insiders who support the idea argue that Kwankwaso brings greater electoral strength than the current vice president.
