The Edo State Government has begun distributing promotion letters to a total of 8,476 public school teachers across the state.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, during a media briefing held in Benin City on Wednesday.
According to Iyamu, the promotion process, which began in February 2025, has now reached its final stage with the formal issuance of letters to the teachers involved.
He explained that the aim of the promotion exercise is to encourage teachers and enhance their productivity.
Iyamu further emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the education sector. He also noted that teachers will benefit from the recently introduced N75,000 minimum wage, which was announced by Governor Monday Okpebholo during the May Day celebrations for public and civil servants.

According to him, “On May Day/Workers’ Day, we also know that the Governor increased the minimum wage from N70,000 to N75,000, and our teachers are also going to benefit from it.
“We also have teachers who have been on a contract called EdoStars. We are also reviewing their appointments to see how we can absorb some of them who are qualified, because we are very particular about those we employ. After all, the quality of teachers is the quality of our children.
“So, a lot is being done to see how we can get the best hands for the well-being and overall benefit of our students,” he said.
The Commissioner for Education also revealed that interviews are currently underway for the recruitment of 500 teachers for basic and senior secondary schools, along with 100 teachers for Technical Colleges.
He explained that this recruitment effort aims to strengthen the workforce within the education sector.

Additionally, the inclusion of 100 teachers for Technical Colleges is designed to ensure that students gain practical skills alongside their academic qualifications, thereby improving their chances of finding employment and even pursuing self-employment opportunities.
“We have also started the recruitment of 500 teachers to galvanize the workforce, and also 100 teachers for the Technical Colleges, because we found out that aside from the fact that you go to schools to acquire certificates, the role of technical education is also very sacred,” he added.
The Commissioner went on to highlight the accomplishments of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration since taking office. These include increasing the subvention for Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma from N41 million to N500 million, as well as inducting 128 medical and 810 nursing students who graduated from AAU in 2022 but had not been inducted by the previous administration.
Other achievements mentioned included significant renovations and improvements to schools across all three senatorial districts and the provision of essential learning resources such as chairs, tables, and books.
