The Kano State Government has uncovered a significant payroll fraud within local government councils, revealing that 247 employees, either retired or deceased, continued to receive payments.
A statement from Musa Muhammad, the Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, confirmed the discovery on Saturday, noting that fraudulent payments amounted to ₦27,824,395.40 in March 2025 alone.
This finding came to light during a validation exercise intended to overhaul the state’s salary administration system. The exercise was part of the government’s broader initiative to promote transparency and accountability.
“Arising from the validation exercise, a disturbing irregularity was uncovered within the payroll system of local government councils,” the statement read. “The findings revealed that 247 individuals have either retired from service or died yet have been appearing in the payroll and their salaries running.”
In what was described as a “swift and effective response,” the Kano State Government reported that the fraudulent sum had been fully recovered and returned to the Local Government Treasury while further investigations continue.
The government expressed its determination to identify and prosecute those involved in the fraud, reinforcing its commitment to holding wrongdoers accountable.
