The Ogun State Government, via the Health Commissioner, Dr. Tomi Coker, issued a public alert on Tuesday regarding the increasing number of diphtheria infections spreading across the state.
Dr. Coker explained that diphtheria is a contagious bacterial disease that spreads easily through close personal contact, including actions like sneezing and coughing.
She advised residents against self-medication, emphasizing that untreated diphtheria can lead to severe health complications or even be fatal.
The commissioner outlined common symptoms of the illness, which include a sore throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, elevated body temperature, neck swelling, and the appearance of a thick white or grey coating in the throat or nasal passages.
She also noted that the infection is preventable through vaccination, maintaining high standards of personal cleanliness, and avoiding contact with individuals who are infected.
“To protect yourself, your family, and the community, we advise the following: Ensure vaccination: Diphtheria is preventable. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunizations.
“Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected. Practice good hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“Avoid close contact with sick persons: If you notice anyone with diphtheria-like symptoms, keep a safe distance and encourage them to seek medical care immediately.
“Seek early treatment: Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate,” she warned.
The commissioner assured residents that the state government and its developmental partners are making every effort to ensure safety.
